Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT)
Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) is a cognitive-behavioral intervention to reduce the risk for criminal recidivism by targeting the moral aspects of an individual’s behavior and its consequences. According to the National Institutes of Health, studies have shown that MRT can be effective in reducing recidivism among offenders by up to one-third relative to those who did not receive MRT.
Why MRT Works
MRT is a cognitive-behavioral intervention designed to enhance moral reasoning, promote personal responsibility, and support long-term behavior change. It is a widely recognized tool for reducing recidivism and is especially valuable for justice-involved individuals.
MRT targets the thinking patterns that underlie criminal behavior and substance use. Clients build accountability, improve decision-making, and increase empathy. Through a structured step-by-step process, clients reflect on past behaviors, identify harmful thinking patterns, and commit to healthier, goal-oriented decision-making. MRT helps participants recognize the impact of their choices and fosters a sense of accountability and purpose.
